The Parental Leave Pay Scheme is an Australian Government initiative that provides up to 18 week’s pay at the minimum wage to eligible working mothers who earn less than $150,000.

The 18 week’s paid leave is comprised of:

1. Set Parental Leave Pay: a set period of 12 weeks which must be used in 1 continuous block within 12 months of the birth of your child.

2. Flexible Parental Leave Pay: a period of up to 30 days which may be taken at any time as negotiated between you and your employer and within 24 months of the birth of your child.

The Parental Leave Pay Scheme may be claimed in addition to any parental leave pay included your Employment Contract or relevant Enterprise Agreement (double the money).

The Parental Leave Pay Scheme also provides for Partner Pay which provides 2 weeks’ pay at the minimum wage to eligible partners. Despite the Partner Pay scheme, according to research undertaken by the University of Sydney only a quarter of men who are entitled to partner pay make a claim.

It is important the new mothers and fathers understand their entitlements under the Parental Leave Pay Scheme so that they may utilise the resources provided to them by the Government.
